First and Second Years

Boren Scholarship – National Security Education Program

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher recommended.
  • All Majors.
  • Summer-only study abroad programs for 1st and 2nd year students - up to $8,000.
  • Semester or academic year study abroad programs - up to $10,000 / $20,000.
  • Cannot be used for study abroad in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. 
  • Deadline in Late January.

  • Minimum GPA 2.8. 
  • Undergraduates (all majors) in good standing who have at least one term of enrollment after studying abroad.
  • Applicants must be receiving need-based financial aid or demonstrate need for financial assistance to study abroad.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes

Gilman International Scholarship

  • All years, all Majors.
  • Applicants MUST be Pell Grant eligible. 
  • Up to $5,000 to study abroad at least 3 weeks in a single country. 
  • Particular interest in supporting students with high financial need, interest in studying in diverse countries, from diverse ethnic backgrounds, and with disabilities. 
  • Deadline in early March.

DAAD Germany – Research Internships in Science and Engineering

  • Sophomores and Juniors; Majors in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, Engineering or closely related fields.
  • German language skills are not required, but would be helpful for everyday life. 
  • Students spend a summer working with German doctoral students on serious research projects; students also study German. 
  • Stipends cover living experiences; partner universities provide housing assistance.

Goldwater Scholarship

  • Sophomores or Juniors. GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Science, Engineering, or Math Majors who intend to pursue graduate study (usually a PhD). Students who plan to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career in practice.
  • Preference give to students with research experience. 
  • Covers tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 a year. Sophomores eligible for a maximum of two years; Juniors for one. 
  • Deadline in middle of fall semester.

National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship Program

  • Minimum GPA 3.3 or top 5% of class; All years.
  • For students from a disadvantaged background who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. 
  • Up to $20,000 per year, paid research at the NIH during the summer; paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation.

National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates - Summer Research

  • Search NSF's database for specific projects and research opportunities for summer research.
  • An REU Site consists of 10 or so undergraduates working in the research program of the host institution on a specific NSF-funded research project. 
  • Award varies by site, but may include stipends, housing, and travel. 
  • Deadline at end of August (except May for Antarctica).

Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program

  • GPA of 3.2 or higher required; All Majors; All years, but first year students must have outstanding academics and significant international experience. 
  • Attend six week summer program on international affairs at Howard University in Washington DC. Academic courses in political economy and history of US foreign relations, in addition to seminars and visits with key policymakers and practitioners of international affairs. 
  • Applicants should express strong interest in international affairs and how this program will assist them in their interests. 
  • Provides tuition, travel, room and board, as well as a $3,200 stipend.

The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship

  • 3.0+ GPA; any STEM field (list on website).
  • Must be US Citizen, 18 years or older. 
  • Recipient must be willing to accept post-graduate employment with the Department of Defense. 
  • Must participate in summer internships at Department of Defense laboratories. 
  • Full tuition and education-related feeds; plus stipend ofr $25,000-$38,000; paid summer internships; health insurance allowance; book allowance; mentoring; employment placement after graduation.

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher; All Majors.
  • Sophomores or Juniors only. 
  • For future leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. 
  • Up to $7,000 for tuition, room and board, and other educational expenses. Sophomores may reapply for a second year of support.

Truman Scholarship

  • GPA of 3.5 or higher recommended; All Majors. 
  • Juniors or Third-year Seniors at the time of selection.
  • For students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education, or other elsewhere in public service. 
  • Up to $30,000 funding for graduate degrees in public service fields; also assistance with career counseling, internships, graduate school admissions, and professional development. Truman Scholars participate in programs such as Truman Scholars Leadership Week and the Summer Institute in Washington, DC. 
  • Scholars must work in public service for three of seven years following their graduate program.

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher recommended; All Majors.
  • Must be committed to completing a master's degree in public and/or international affairs at one of the PPIA Consortium graduate schools. 
  • Seeking diverse students who are underrepresented in leadership positions in government, nonprofits, international organizations, and other institutional settings. 
  • Full tuition to attend PPIA Junior Summer Institute, plus a minimum of $1,000 stipend; a minimum of $5,000 toward graduate school tuition. 
  • Deadline in early November.

Gates-Cambridge Scholarship 

  • GPA 3.7 or higher recommended; Seniors and Recent Grads; All Majors.
  • Pursue graduate study and research in any subject at the University of Cambridge. 
  • Applicants should demonstrate academic excellence, a good fit between their interests and Cambridge, evidence of leadership potential, and a commitment to improving the lives of others. 
  • Covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge, including travel and living expenses; Last for normal duration of academic degree program. 
  • Applicants must also apply directly to Cambridge and be admitted through their normal procedures.

Marshall Scholarship

  • Seniors and Recent Grads; All Majors.
  • Study for 2 years at a UK institution in any field of study. 
  • Students should have intellect and fine character, motivation, purpose, and the potential to make a significant contribution to their own society. 
  • Covers two years University fees, living expenses, books, thesis grant, research and travel grants, and travel to/from the UK. Possibility of an additional year.

Mitchell Scholarship

  • GPA 3.7 or above recommended; Seniors and Recent Grads; All Majors. 
  • One year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
  • Applicants should have documented achievements in three areas: academic, leadership, and commitment to community and service. 
  • Covers costs of tuition, housing, living expenses, and travel for one academic year.

Rhodes Scholarship

  • GPA 3.7 or higher; Seniors and Recent Grads; All Majors. 
  • Study at Oxford University for one or two years in any course of study. 
  • Students must have demonstrated intellectual and academic achievement, also integrity, interest in and respect for their fellow beings, the ability to lead, and the energy to use their talents to the full. 
  • Covers all educational cost for one or two years of study at Oxford, living stipend, and travel expenses. May apply for extension to three years of study.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher recommended. 
  • Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree, be pursing a career that involves regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language, be at or near an advanced level in that language, be able to devote themselves exclusively to language study during the grant, and be a US citizen or permanent resident. 
  • One year advanced level language study in approved language programs in East or Southeast Asia. 
  • Cover expenses at a graduate student level for a full year of language study in Asia, including tuition and fees, plus a stipend for travel, living, and study expenses.

  • Minimum GPA 3.4 recommended; Seniors or Recent Grads; All Majors.
  • Two main types of Fulbright grants:
    • Fulbright Academic Study Grant: Academic Year. Provides transportation, book and research allowance, living expenses for academic year, health insurance, tuition (in some cases), and language or orientation courses (where appropriate). Consult individual country pages for details.
      • Evidence of past coursework and research experience concerning the host country/region and/or the field of study is important. Prior study abroad in proposed country/region can be helpful, but not required. 
    • Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships: Academic Year. Teach English and conversation abroad. Provides living stipend, insurance, and orientation costs. See website for countries offered.

Global Health Corps Fellowship Program

  • Applicants must be under the age of 30, have a Bachelor's degree, and be proficient in English. 
  • Each fellowship placement requires different skills. 
  • Provides opportunities to work on the frontlines of the fight for global health equity in year-long fellowship.
  • Fellows work in year-long paid position at a partner organization in Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, or in the Northeast USA.
  • Provides stipends to cover travel, living, work, and insurance.

Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship

  • 3.2 GPA or higher required; Seniors and Recent Grads; All Majors. 
  • Women, members of underrepresented groups, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply. 
  • This fellowship program was created by the US State Department for outstanding students interested in careers as Foreign Service officers. 
  • Candidates must be seeking admission to graduate school for the following year in a two-year, full-time master's degree program in public policy, international affairs, or public administration, or in an academic field such as business, economics, political science, sociology, or foreign languages (US graduate institutions only). 
  • Fellows are obligated to a minimum of five years of service as a Foreign Service officer or may be required to reimburse the Department of State.
  • Financial support of up to $37,500 annually for actual expenses during two years of graduate school, to cover tuition, room and board, books, fees, and certain types of travel. Fellows receive stipends and a domestic summer internship between the two years; and a summer overseas internship following the second year.

Fulbright US Student Program - Grants for Study or Teaching Abroad

  • Minimum GPA 3.4 recommended; Seniors or Recent Grads; All Majors.
  • Two main types of Fulbright grants:
    • Fulbright Academic Study Grant: Academic Year. Provides transportation, book and research allowance, living expenses for academic year, health insurance, tuition (in some cases), and language or orientation courses (where appropriate). Consult individual country pages for details.
      • Evidence of past coursework and research experience concerning the host country/region and/or the field of study is important. Prior study abroad in proposed country/region can be helpful, but not required. 
    • Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships: Academic Year. Teach English and conversation abroad. Provides living stipend, insurance, and orientation costs. See website for countries offered. 
      • Prior experience in tutoring, team-leading, coaching, teaching, camp counseling is very helpful. Coursework in education or English-as-a-second-language is NOT required but may be helpful.

Hertz Graduate Fellowship

  • Seniors and Recent Grads; Majors in applied physical sciences who are seeking graduate study in an eligible field. 
  • Supports students at a list of pre-approved graduate universities (see website). 
  • Applicants should be working toward a PhD in applied and physical engineering sciences, or modern biology which applies the physical sciences intensively. 
  • Applicants should show exceptional intelligence and creativity in scientific work, excellent technical education, character conducive to high attainment, and moral and ethical values. 
  • Fellows make a moral commitment to make their "skills available to the United States in times of national emergency."
  • Hertz Fellowship often stacks with other fellowships (ie. NSF). 
  • Provides $32,000/9-month stipend and full tuition for up to 5 years. Fellowship may vary depending on other awards granted to student.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship

  • Seniors and Recent Grads; Major in a science, engineering, or math field. 
  • Applications are encouraged from students in underrepresented groups. 
  • Supports students to pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines (see website) at any institution of their choice. 
  • Full tuition and fees, monthly stipend, and some insurance for up to three years. 
  • Deadline in early December.

National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship Program

  • Minimum GPA 3.3 or top 5% of class; All years.
  • For students from a disadvantaged background who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. 
  • Up to $20,000 per year, paid research at the NIH during the summer; paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation. 
  • Deadline in mid March.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program

  • Seniors and Recent Grads.
  • For outstanding graduate students in STEM disciplines pursuing research-based degrees. NSF Fellows are expected to become knowledge experts who will contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in STEM fields. 
  • See website for specific information for each STEM field. 
  • Provides tuition and fees, plus stipend of approximately $34,000/year. Available for a maximum of three years usable over a five-year period. 
  • Deadlines around October, but vary by field.

The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship

  • 3.0+ GPA; any STEM field (list on website).
  • Must be US Citizen, 18 years or older. 
  • Recipient must be willing to accept post-graduate employment with the Department of Defense. 
  • Must participate in summer internships at Department of Defense laboratories. 
  • Full tuition and education-related feeds; plus stipend ofr $25,000-$38,000; paid summer internships; health insurance allowance; book allowance; mentoring; employment placement after graduation.
