Topic: Starting Module on Poverty
Class outline: Walk-in song list, Question of the day? Introduce the cycles of poverty, class discussion and share experiences, review new module assignments.
ENGR 275 Dynamics
Topic: Work Energy
Dynamics is a sophomore level class in engineering where we study the kinematics and kinetics of particles and rigid bodies. This class is usually organized to provide: 1) a brief section of theory, 2) time to work an example problem where theory is applied, and 3) some active learning where students apply their knowledge to additional example problems. Color coding of equations and diagrams usually assists in student learning. The class is usually very active with the professor asking for students for input in setting up problems. Come along for the ride!

BIOL 333 Animal Physiology
Topic: Temperature and Heat Regulation in Animals
This class is a lecture that includes embedded in-class activities, where students are given a question or problem to solve that relates to the lecture material. During these activities, lecture is paused for approximately 5 minutes while students discuss solutions and the instructor talks with small groups and individuals. Then, the class talks through the solution as a group before continuing with the lecture.
PSY 201 Introduction to Psychology
Topic: Developmental Psych; specifically moral development
This is a large, forum-style class with 120 students. I use apps on students phone (Acadly) to have them answer questions and get feedback in real time.
BLAW 263 Business Law
Topic: Introduction to Contracts
I will use the Socratic Method of teaching. I keep the students engaged by asking questions about the material. I do not allow students to be on their phones during class.

Topic: Understanding Organizations - Theory and Perspective
This is a lecture/application course. Half of our class session is lecture and the other half is activity focused on applying the information from lecture. Visitors are welcome to attend a partial or full class period.

NURS 247 Health Assessment
Topic: Peripheral vascular and abdominal assessments - Health assessment of an adult and identificaton of normal and abnormal findings
Our lecture time includes interactive learning. I use a chunking teaching method that builds on existing knowledge and engages students in recall and application. I intersperse the content with case studies, practice test questions, concept maps, and psychomotor learning for skills. Visitors may leave early if needed.

As such, if someone were to come observe, they may or may not see much. Sometimes I am very active and the students have lots of questions and an observer would see me interacting/coaching regularly. Sometimes, the students “get it” on their own and my might just respond to a few questions in which time the observer would just see me sitting up front or walking around. You never know. Under neither circumstance would they see a lot of formal “teaching.” |
